5 Societal Ills That Starts From Boarding School

A boarding school is a school where students live and study. It is an institution where children live within premises while being given formal instruction. The word “boarding” is used in the sense of “room and board”, i.e. lodging and meals. In some schools, the day-students live in their homes and come to school, while attending the same class with the boarders. When the close of the day comes, the day students return to their homes, while the boarders return to their dormitories in the school premises.
Attending a boarding school has its pros and cons, but here we will be looking at societal ills that start in boarding school. Not that these societal ills can’t be found in other places and gatherings, but they are peculiar to most boarding schools. Although there is no way to make a broad conclusion as to whether boarding schools are good or bad, some recent developments in Nigeria have triggered public outrage; The recent death of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni is one case amidst others. So here are 5 societal ills that start in boarding school;

1. Bullying
A bully is someone who often hurts or frightens other people. So the act of bullying is the use of force, coercion, hurtful teasing or threat, to abuse, aggressively dominate or intimidate. The behavior is often repeated and habitual. Bullying happens when there is an imbalance of physical or social power. This imbalance distinguishes bullying from conflict. The act of bullying is a subcategory of aggressive behavior characterized by the following three criteria: hostile intent, imbalance of power, and repetition over a period of time.

Boarding School ills It is the activity of repeated, aggressive behavior intended to hurt another individual, physically, mentally, or emotionally. When speaking of bullying, there are levels to it, but at no level is bullying a good act to be encouraged in society. The effect it has on the individual being bullied sometimes results in the trauma of different types and other things. In most boarding schools the act of bullying is very common. Unlike other schools, boarding students, apart from having classes together, eat and live in the same space. Most times, they are only separated when they all go home to their parents or guardians during holidays. To curb this act, more attention needs to be paid to the students and the activities they indulge in after classes.

2. Homosexuality
The term homosexuality can be said to be sexual interest in and attraction to members of one’s own sex. Lesbianism and gay are words that fall under this category. Lesbianism is a sexual attraction or sexual activities between two or more women, rather with the opposite gender. Female homosexuality is the tendency of a female to be emotionally and sexually attracted to other females and vice versa for the male folks. But in their case, it is said to be gay. Lesbianism/gay is accepted in some countries across the world, most especially the western world; but is severely frowned against in most African countries, it is viewed as a taboo

Some students get influenced by their peers and end up being homosexuals. When peers trust themselves so much, they indulge in homosexuality because they do not think that their peers can be of bad influence. Most parents send their children to co-educational schools to avoid homosexual behaviours because its rise in schools is becoming alarming, and it serves as a source of distraction to the students leading to some venereal diseases ranging from HIV, Bacterial vaginosis (BV), Human papillomavirus (HPV), Trichomoniasis “Trich”, Herpes, etc.
Nowadays boarding schools serve as a major breeding ground for the act of homosexuality.
School authorities should try as much as they can to combat homosexuality in schools, so that young teenagers can be more focused, and understand real-life situations.

3. Cultism
A cult is a social group that is defined by its unusual religious, spiritual, or philosophical beliefs, or by its common interest in a particular personality, object, or goal. Some say a cult is a way of life, an attitude, an idea that has become very popular. As people go to school to learn, so also they form cults, alongside their studies. The low level of supervision of students breeds cultism in boarding schools.

For students that attend day school, there is the supervision of the school authorities and then their parents/guardian at home, but for students in boarding schools, they have only the supervision of the school authorities which is not round the clock, hence cannot suffice to curb this. Words like influence, force, and peer pressure are keywords for fostering bad habits and acts like cultism among children; it further becomes greater when they are left to their own vices. These youngest start to practice cultism at such a young age, which is detrimental for society because are the said leaders of tomorrow.

4. Mental health Issues
Depression, personality disorder, anxiety disorder, etc are all mental health issues with boarding schools being one of the largest breeding grounds for mental health issues. In fact, one of the lasting effects of early boarding is mental health issues. A young child sent away from home to live with strangers, and in the process loses attachment with his/her authority figures and their home. They’re exposed to prolonged separation. They may experience bullying and become less sensitive. This combination leads to unbearable emotional stress.

A young child does not have the mental capacity for creating a coherent narrative out of these events on their own, as they are unable to process it. This mental state may become embodied, leading to conversion, physiological symptoms, and a large number of psychological symptoms. These same kids get poured back into society and they start to display certain behaviours that call for attention. If the younger generation is damaged from such a young age, who then will lead the nation when the time comes!…And just like that vicious cycle continues unchecked.

5. Drugs
There is a popular saying that the people around you have a lot more influence on you, than they would if you only saw them during the school day. But it does depend on the people you’re surrounded by. If the people around you are against drinking and doing drugs then you’re probably not going to do it yourself even if you have other friends doing it. The rate at which boarding school students indulge in drugs of different kinds is definitely alarming. Once again the low level of supervision on the path of the adults in these boarding schools fosters such acts. Also taking into account that some boarding schools are worse than others when it comes to drugs.

Prince Charles has acknowledged the “appalling atrocity of slavery”, describing it as something “which forever stains our history”, during the ceremony marking Barbados’ historic transition to a republic. Charles summed up the period when the UK was one of the leading players in the transatlantic slave trade as the “darkest days of our past”, but looking to the future said the “creation of this republic offers a new beginning”. The prince will be head of state of many nations in the Caribbean when he becomes king and his words will resonate across the region. Barbados’ ties with the British monarchy going back centuries were severed just after the clock struck midnight on Tuesday morning when the nation’s first president, Dame Sandra Mason, was sworn into office replacing the Queen as head of state during a televised open-air ceremony in the capital Bridgetown. In a message to the president and the people of Barbados, the Queen sent the new republic her “warmest good wishes for yo
